California State Senator Scott Wiener said that when Democrats retake the House they must impeach President Donald Trump, and that doing so is in addition to work on housing, health care, energy, and childcare costs. Two days earlier he said the Russian diesel arrangement sent a clear message to Ukraine and Europe that the United States does not have their backs against Russian aggression. Wiener is a state legislator running for a House seat.
“When Democrats retake the House, we must impeach Trump. This isn’t in lieu of the critical work ahead to lower people’s costs around housing, health care, energy, childcare, etc. It’s in addition — because if the crimes Trump has committed aren’t impeachable, then impeachment has no meaning and the rule of law doesn’t exist,” Wiener, a Democrat who represents San Francisco in the California Senate, wrote Sunday. The post does not name a specific charge. His state senate site did not carry a separate release with it.
The diesel claim is in an earlier post. On Oct. 9 Wiener wrote that Trump had started “an illegal, disastrous war that explodes global energy costs and then make a deal with the devil to try to lower them — sending a clear message to Ukraine and Europe that the U.S. does not in any way, shape, or form have their backs against Russian aggression.” He called Trump “the worst, most incompetent, and most corrupt President in U.S. history.” Those characterizations are his. The post does not cite a statute or a volume of diesel.
The license on the record is diesel. The Office of Foreign Assets Control issued General License No. 135 on Oct. 9. The license text authorizes transactions related to the sale, delivery, offloading, or importation, including into the United States, of diesel fuel of Russian origin, through April 7, 2027. It does not mention Ukraine, Europe, or a message about alliances. Wiener’s Oct. 9 post treats the arrangement as abandoning Ukraine. The license does not address that claim.
Wiener is not a member of the House. His account bio describes him as a California state senator running for Congress. Impeachment begins in the House. A state senator cannot introduce or vote on articles. The Sunday post treats a future Democratic majority as the vehicle. It does not say he has drafted articles.
An impeachment resolution is already pending. H.Res. 1486, introduced by Rep. Al Green on Aug. 24, 2026, impeaches Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors and alleges abuse of the presidency, including through ICE and CBP operations. It was referred to the Judiciary Committee. Wiener’s post does not cite it. The prior impeachments in 2019 and 2021 ended in Senate acquittals. Wiener’s post does not cite those proceedings.
The sanctions law signed weeks before the diesel license sets conditions for ending pressure on Russia. A White House notice said the president signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 on Sept. 18. Member releases describe termination conditions that require a certification that Russia has ceased hostilities and signed a peace agreement accepted by Ukraine. No such certification is on a White House page. Wiener’s posts do not cite the act.
“Must impeach,” “deal with the devil,” and “does not in any way, shape, or form have their backs against Russian aggression” are Wiener’s. The Oct. 9 license, the Sept. 18 signing of the Graham Act, and the absence of a certification under that act are the documents. The gap is between a state senator who says the diesel arrangement abandons Ukraine and that impeachment is required, and a license that authorizes diesel transactions without addressing alliances or an impeachment resolution filed by him.
