President Donald Trump publicly attributed the Apache’s loss to Iran in a Truth Social post Tuesday, saying “the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz” and vowing that “the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.” Two U.S. officials told CBS News that initial reports indicated an Iranian drone brought down the Apache, though investigators had not yet confirmed whether the strike was deliberate. U.S. Central Command announced follow-on self-defense strikes against Iran later on June 9.
How the Rescue Unfolded
The U.S. Army AH-64 Apache went down near the coast of Oman on the evening of June 8 while patrolling regional waters as part of the U.S. blockade enforcement mission in and around the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command confirmed both crew members were rescued within approximately two hours and were in stable condition.
The rescue was led by Task Force 59 — the U.S. Fifth Fleet’s unmanned systems unit based in Bahrain — which deployed a Corsair autonomous surface vessel to locate and recover the pilots from the water.
