“I Never Said That We Are Going to Make Bombs,” Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi Argues — “I Said That We Have 440 Kilos of 60 Percent Enriched Material, and That Was Not a Secret”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied claims that Iran intends to produce nuclear weapons, describing recent accusations as a pretext for what he called an “unjustified act of aggression” against the country. Speaking on MS Now, Araghchi emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program, including its stockpile of 440 kilograms of 60 percent enriched uranium, is publicly documented and monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“They want to justify an unjustified act of aggression, so they are trying to make some excuses for themselves. I never said that we are going to make bombs. I said that we have 440 kilos of 60 percent enriched material, and that was not a secret. That is what is mentioned in the reports of the IAEA,” Araghchi said. He noted that, according to international experts, the stockpile could theoretically be further enriched to produce up to ten nuclear bombs, though Iran is prepared to down blend the material to lower enrichment levels.

Araghchi framed the remarks as a clarification of the events that took place during diplomatic talks in Geneva on February 26, prior to the outbreak of hostilities in the region. He said the statements were intended to demonstrate Iran’s willingness to make significant concessions and engage in diplomacy, rather than signaling any intent to develop weapons.

The foreign minister criticized how the United States interpreted his comments, suggesting that Washington misrepresented the conversation in order to rationalize military strikes. “By saying that, I wanted to say that the concession that we are going, that we are making, is really big. But how they have interpreted that? I don’t know,” Araghchi said.

Araghchi’s remarks underscore Tehran’s position that recent attacks targeting Iranian infrastructure were unprovoked and unjustified. He insisted that Iran’s nuclear capabilities remain strictly for peaceful purposes, and he reiterated the country’s willingness to reduce enrichment levels in coordination with international oversight to prevent escalation.
