President Donald Trump responded lightheartedly on April 30, 2026, to questions about enhanced security measures, including possibly wearing a bulletproof vest, following a recent assassination attempt.
The discussion arose after the April 25 shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, where gunman Cole Tomas Allen was apprehended near the event attended by Trump and other administration officials. One Secret Service agent was shot but protected by body armor.
Asked about reports of deliberations over him wearing a vest moving forward, Trump quipped, “I don’t know if I can handle looking 20 pounds heavier. These guys, they look so good. Some of these guys are physical specimens… If you want to gain 20 to 25 pounds, get a vest.”
He praised the effectiveness of the body armor that saved the agent, noting the vest absorbed a close-range powerful shot. “The vest did an amazing job… Still a lot of power behind that shot though. That’s like getting hit by Mike Tyson,” Trump said, adding that the officer was reluctant to even go to the hospital.

Trump acknowledged the consideration of such protection but expressed reluctance, saying it felt like “giving into a bad element.” He stated he had not yet pursued details on the matter and emphasized that he does not dwell on personal safety concerns, as it would interfere with his duties.
The incident was the third reported attempt on Trump’s life in recent years, prompting broader White House discussions on security protocols for public events. Trump has separately advocated for a secure White House ballroom to reduce risks associated with off-site gatherings.
