“This Political Violence Needs to End,” Karoline Leavitt Speaks Out Following WHCD Shooting

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described a chaotic and dangerous scene at the White House Correspondents’ dinner, recounting how a night intended to celebrate free speech quickly turned into an security emergency following a shooting incident that authorities say likely targeted Donald Trump and senior administration officials. In a post shared the morning after the event, Leavitt emphasized both her gratitude toward law enforcement and her concern about escalating political violence.

Leavitt wrote that “what was supposed to be a fun night” at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner “was hijacked by a depraved crazy person who sought to assassinate the President and kill as many top Trump administration officials as possible.” The annual event, held at the Washington Hilton, had drawn thousands of attendees, including cabinet members, journalists, and political figures, before it was abruptly disrupted by the sound of gunfire and a rapid security response.

According to federal officials, a suspect armed with a shotgun opened fire at a security checkpoint inside the hotel, striking a Secret Service agent before being subdued and taken into custody. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the attacker appeared to have intended to target administration figures, “likely including the president.” Melania Trump and the president were escorted out of the ballroom as security personnel moved guests to safety and secured the area.

Leavitt, who said she was backstage with the president and first lady at the time, described the evacuation and credited the Secret Service for their swift actions. “I was with President Trump and the First Lady back stage after we were quickly ushered to safety by Secret Service,” she wrote. She added, “Thank you to law enforcement for keeping all of us safe, including the brave agent who took a bullet to the chest and immediately moved to neutralize the shooter.” Officials later confirmed the घायल agent was protected by a bulletproof vest and released from the hospital.

In her post, Leavitt also relayed the president’s reaction to the incident, writing, “President Trump was truly fearless, but as he said last night, this political violence needs to end.” Her comments echoed broader condemnation from U.S. and international leaders, many of whom characterized the attack as an assault on democratic institutions and called for a de-escalation of political tensions.

Leavitt, who became the youngest press secretary in U.S. history when she assumed the role in 2025, has been a longtime aide to the president, previously serving in both his first administration and his 2024 campaign. Concluding her remarks on the incident, she urged national reflection, writing simply, “Pray for our country.”
