Jeffries Says Republicans "Are Unfit to Govern," Accusing Them of "Lying About the Economy and the War of Choice in Iran" as Democrats Sharpen Their Midterm Case Against the GOP

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused congressional Republicans of misleading the public about both the economy and the war with Iran, warning that voters would hold the party accountable in the upcoming midterm elections.

“Republican extremists keep lying about the economy and the war of choice in Iran,” Jeffries wrote on X. “They are unfit to govern. And will be held accountable by the American people.”

The post continues a message Jeffries has repeated consistently in official appearances throughout the summer. On July 23, following the House’s passage of a war powers resolution, Jeffries held a press conference where he said “the verdict is clear: Donald Trump and House Republicans have failed the American people,” citing rising costs, immigration enforcement and the war together, and describing the resolution as part of “our continuing effort to bring Donald Trump’s reckless war of choice in the Middle East to a close,” according to an official transcript his office posted.

Three days later, Jeffries appeared on CNN’s State of the Union to launch the “100 Days Out Weekend of Action,” telling host Dana Bash that Democrats would “continue to push back on Republican extremism and fight to lower costs for hardworking American taxpayers,” according to an official transcript of the interview.

The following day, Jeffries appeared on Bloomberg TV, where he said “life has gotten far too expensive under Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress,” and, when asked about proposals like a gas tax pause, said “clearly, the most significant thing that could be done at this moment, as opposed to a temporary measure, is to end the war in Iran,” according to an official transcript posted on his House website.

Jeffries returned to the same themes in a July 28 press conference in Buffalo, New York, saying House Democrats “remain united in the fight against Republican efforts to rip healthcare away from everyday Americans and will continue working to lower the high cost of living,” according to an official release from his office.

The economic backdrop to Jeffries’ latest comment includes the Commerce Department’s report that GDP grew at a 1.5 percent annual rate in the second quarter, below the 1.8 percent economists had expected and down from 2.1 percent growth in the first quarter. The slowdown was driven substantially by a surge in imports tied to the AI investment boom, which weighs against GDP calculations even as it reflects underlying economic activity. Consumer spending, by contrast, rose at a strong 3.2 percent pace in the quarter despite gas prices that averaged $4.22 a gallon from April through June.

Jeffries’ reference to a “war of choice” reflects language he and other Democrats have used consistently since fighting with Iran began Feb. 28, arguing Trump launched and sustained the conflict without specific congressional authorization. House Democrats have forced multiple War Powers Resolution votes since then, largely symbolic given the Republican majority, but intended, in Jeffries’ words from the July 23 press conference, as part of the ongoing effort to force an end to the war.

The Pentagon’s confirmed death toll for U.S. service members in the war has reached 18 as of early August, following a dispute over how the department calculated and reported the figure earlier in the summer.

Jeffries has led House Democrats as minority leader since January 2023, and has increasingly paired the party’s affordability message with criticism of the war’s cost and continuation as the November midterm elections approach, arguing both reflect the same pattern of Republican governance failures.

Neither House Republican leadership nor the White House has issued a direct public response to Jeffries’ latest statement.
