Japanese PM Takaichi Says She Is “Relieved to Hear That President Trump Is Safe Following the Terrifying Gunfire”

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she was relieved to learn that Donald Trump was safe following a shooting incident in Washington, issuing a statement that emphasized both her concern and a broader condemnation of violence.

In a post shared late April 25, Takaichi wrote, “I am relieved to learn that President Trump is safe after the terrifying gunshots. Violence can never be tolerated anywhere in the world.”

Her remarks came after an attack during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, where a suspect opened fire at a security checkpoint. According to U.S. officials, the gunman fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent before being subdued and arrested. Authorities said the attacker was likely targeting members of the administration, potentially including the president, who was attending the event alongside First Lady Melania Trump.

The incident prompted a rapid security response as attendees were evacuated from the ballroom. The injured agent was reportedly protected by a bulletproof vest and later released from the hospital. Officials indicated the suspect may have acted alone, and an investigation is ongoing into how weapons were brought into the venue.

Takaichi’s response aligned with a broader international reaction, as world leaders issued statements condemning the violence and expressing relief that the president and others in attendance were unharmed. Her comments focused squarely on the principle that such acts should not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Takaichi, who took office in October 2025, is Japan’s first female prime minister and a prominent conservative figure. Known for her strong stance on national security and economic policy, she has built a reputation as a decisive leader, often emphasizing order, stability, and firm responses to global challenges—themes reflected in her swift condemnation of the attack.
