Clyburn: “No Answer to This Question Justifies Such an Exorbitant Donation”
“Every American needs to ask themselves: Why did a Russian oligarch close to Putin — who recently traveled alongside Putin in China — spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on Trump’s son’s wedding celebrations?” Clyburn wrote. “Whether or not they are ‘dear friends,’ no answer to this question justifies such an exorbitant donation from such a shadowy source.”
ProPublica Found Kremlev Paid for Islands, Fireworks at May Wedding
According to ProPublica’s investigation, published Sept. 14 and based on records and interviews with dozens of people, Russian boxing official Umar Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for Trump Jr.’s May 24 wedding to Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas, including renting a private island used for the reception and guest lodging and paying for a beachside fireworks display. The payments came from a Dubai-based entity affiliated with the International Boxing Association, which Kremlev leads.
Kremlev Traveled With Putin’s Delegation Days Before the Wedding
In the days before the wedding, Kremlev was in China as part of the group accompanying Putin, according to Chinese state media cited by ProPublica, though Kremlev’s press office said he was not part of Putin’s “official delegation.” The month before, Putin had awarded Kremlev the state honor known as the Order of Friendship.
Ukraine’s Government Sanctions List Documents Kremlev’s Ties to Russian Security Services
Kremlev appears on Ukraine’s official sanctions database, maintained by its Main Intelligence Directorate, which states he has led the Russian Boxing Federation “with the support of the russian Federal Security Service” since 2016 and, as IBA president, made Gazprom — a Kremlin-linked, already-sanctioned energy company — the organization’s sole financial sponsor.
Former Counterintelligence Officials Called the Arrangement Alarming
Frank Montoya Jr., a retired senior FBI counterintelligence official, told ProPublica that accepting such a gift creates potential future obligations: “If I’m paying for your wedding, at some point, you’re going to owe me something.” Montoya said Trump Jr. “put himself in a precarious position” and that the arrangement “should be unthinkable for the son of the president.” Holden Triplett, who served as counterintelligence director on Trump’s first-term National Security Council, said Russian intelligence services routinely seek to build ties with U.S. officials and their families, adding, “money is a tried-and-true method to gain access.”
Trump Jr.’s Spokesperson Confirmed the Payments, Called Kremlev a Personal Friend
A spokesperson for Trump Jr. did not dispute that Kremlev paid for the wedding expenses, telling ProPublica, “Umar is a personal friend of Don” and that Kremlev is “not someone he has a business relationship with,” saying the two met through a mutual friend and bonded over boxing and the outdoors. Kremlev’s press office similarly described the relationship as “friendly,” saying the men met “a couple of years ago” and that Kremlev “has never discussed political matters” with Trump Jr. Bettina Trump said on Instagram that the couple held a private ceremony May 22 “surrounded ONLY by our family,” and that the Kremlev-funded island celebration was a previously planned trip that “was never intended to be our wedding weekend,” adding, “our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us” and calling it “an extraordinarily generous wedding gift” unrelated to her husband’s last name.
Trump Initially Denied Knowing Kremlev, Then the White House Softened the Denial
Trump told NBC News, “I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him,” adding that Kremlev “didn’t pay for Don and Bettina’s wedding” and describing the Bahamas celebration as a separate “afterparty” — a characterization that did not dispute ProPublica’s core finding, since the disputed payments funded the post-wedding celebration rather than the private ceremony itself. Trump separately told reporters “it’s no big deal!” regarding the controversy.
Top House Oversight Democrat Opened a Formal Investigation
Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent letters to Trump Jr. and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles announcing an investigation into the matter, according to an official committee press release. Garcia wrote to Trump Jr. that his ties to Kremlev “may be the most serious allegation against you to date” and that the arrangement “raises serious questions about pay-to-play schemes and foreign intelligence infiltration of the President’s family,” citing Trump Jr.’s stake in companies holding Defense Department contracts. In his letter to Wiles, Garcia requested all “documents, records, and communications between the White House and Mr. Donald Trump, Jr., concerning Mr. Umar Kremlev,” including any warnings officials may have given about Kremlev’s ties to Putin. Garcia separately asked whether Trump Jr. holds a security clearance, whether he disclosed the relationship to the White House, and whether Trump’s absence from the wedding was related to Kremlev’s involvement, requesting documents including the full guest list.
Senate Democrat Also Condemned the Arrangement on the Floor
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., condemned the allegations in Senate floor remarks captured by C-SPAN, joining other Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who told a podcast host the arrangement showed Trump family members “are in the pocket of everyone but the American people.”
IBA Itself Faces Olympic Sanctions Over Opaque Russian Financing
The International Boxing Association, which Kremlev has led since 2020, was stripped of its authority to organize Olympic boxing by the International Olympic Committee in 2023, which cited the organization’s refusal to “transparently explain the sources of its financing” amid its financial dependence on Gazprom.
Related Kremlev-Linked Organization Is Separately Sanctioned Over Ukrainian Children
Kremlev is also involved with an organization called Healthy Fatherland, led by his wife’s twin sister, which is under Ukrainian sanctions over allegations it participated in relocating Ukrainian children from Russian-occupied territories under the guise of “rehabilitation,” according to ProPublica’s reporting. Healthy Fatherland did not respond to ProPublica’s request for comment.
Jared Kushner and the White House Did Not Respond to ProPublica’s Questions
Kushner, who has led U.S. negotiations with Russia over the war in Ukraine and attended the wedding, did not respond to ProPublica’s requests for comment. The White House and the Russian government also did not respond.

ProPublica noted the current episode carries echoes of Trump Jr.’s June 2016 meeting with a Russian attorney at Trump Tower, which became a focus of former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference; Mueller’s report ultimately concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge Trump Jr. with a crime in connection with that meeting.
