Vice President JD Vance paid tribute to American service members killed overseas during remarks to the International Association of Fire Fighters, reflecting on the solemn experience of attending a dignified transfer ceremony for soldiers who died during the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Speaking before firefighters and first responders, Vance began his remarks on a somber note, describing the personal significance of participating in the ceremony honoring the fallen troops. The vice president said the moment left a lasting impression. “I was honored to be able to participate in the dignified transfer of six American soldiers who were killed overseas in this conflict with Iran” Vance said while addressing the gathering.

The dignified transfer ceremony took place at Dover Air Force Base, where the remains of fallen U.S. service members are traditionally returned to American soil before being reunited with their families.

Vance noted that he had never previously attended such a ceremony and described the experience as deeply moving. Speaking to firefighters—many of whom have served in uniform themselves—he acknowledged the shared sense of duty among those who risk their lives in service to others.

“You all know better than almost any category of Americans what it means to put on a uniform and to sacrifice for our country,” Vance said.

The vice president’s remarks came one day after he publicly reflected on the ceremony in a message posted online. In that message, he wrote that he and his wife, Usha Vance, joined Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to honor the fallen service members as their remains were returned to the United States.

“Today, Usha and I joined President Trump and the First Lady in honoring the ultimate sacrifice made by six American heroes who were returned to their families at Dover,” Vance wrote. “We owe our eternal gratitude to the men and women of our Armed Forces. Please keep them all in your prayers.”

Vance said the willingness of individuals to put on a uniform and risk their lives for others represents one of the country’s defining strengths, adding that the sacrifices made by service members overseas reflect the same spirit of duty shared by firefighters at home.

His comments underscored the administration’s public recognition of the troops killed in the recent conflict and highlighted the solemn rituals that accompany the return of fallen service members to the United States.
